Dealing with a MBP here which works perfectly with an external monitor...does this mean its definitely the LCD which has failed?

Could be just the connector going from the motherboard the the display. It doesn't mean the panel itself is broken. The Apple Store will generally be able to inspect and determine the problem (and a cost estimate if outside of warranty) before you have to pay anything.

uhm, what is the problem? the internal screen doesn't work or what?

i guess if it doesn't show anything, but works with an external, i'd probably say its safe to asume theres a problem with the internal screen.
