MBP16 + Firefox temperature mystery
I have a refurb MBP16 Base model, one month old. Running 10.15.5. I use it for media, light programing, and browsing. I am pleased with it, but there is a small mystery.
When I use Firefox, I noticed that some websites make the CPU usage and temperature go *crazy*. When I open these sites in a tab, temperature (as measured by iStat CPU PECI) goes from 100 to 190 in about 3 minutes. (I am not running any interesting extensions.)
While all this happens, activity monitor says “Firefox web content” is using 140% of CPU.
If I close that one tab in Firefox, and temps drop down again fast.
So, my question is, WTF is tomshardware.com doing with their site that pegs my CPU?
This is not an issue in other browsers, so I should ask “what is Firefox *allowing* tomshardware.com do on my CPU?” Minting bitcoins?
Can anyone confirm or deny? Does anyone know why or have ideas?
Aloha!
