I'm wanting to order a MBP16 for the wife. About time she upgraded from her 2012 MBP15. She's a graphic designer, will use Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and XD heavily. Only video editing done is basic home movies / social media, nothing professional, once a month at most.

I'm thinking either a M1 Max 24core GPU, 32GB memory 2TB storage or for $200 more 32core GPU, 64gb memory but 1TB storage.

If it were my laptop, I would go for more power as can always fix storage w external solutions. But for her, I've seen her issues over the years w externals (failures, damaged connectors, forgot at home...) so I know she would prefer the convenience of a large internal. For her usage, would she benefit at all from more ram/gpu cores?

How much storage and RAM does her current MBP has?

If she can do all her work on a 2012 MBP, then I suppose a M1 Max with 32 GB would be just fine. How long does she intend to keep it?

If she's (comfortably) doing her current workflow on a 2012 MBP, she almost certainly doesn't need a Max tbh

It's been slowing her down. And she hasn't really used it last 2 years as we have our first child, but she's looking to get back to work soon. I guess even a base M1 Pro will be leaps and bounds over what she has now.

An M1 (neither Pro nor Max) would be leaps and bounds ahead of what she has now.

Max is certainly unnecessary for that workflow. She just wouldn’t feel the benefit.
