MBPr AirPlay stuttering, but fine on iPad/iPhone

When I stream videos from my MBPr to my apple tv there is significant stuttering, although the audio is smooth. When I stream from my iPhone or iPad it's completely smooth. Is there something wrong with my rMBP or is this a common problem? I can't imagine why an iPhone can handle it but an overly expensive laptop cannot.
