MDP-Dual link DVI adapter not working with RMBP?

Hi there, I'm having difficulties getting my RMBP with Dual-link DVI adapter from Apple (URL below) to work with my 30" HP external monitor. Has anybody tried the RMBP with an external, non Thunderbolt, display, and successfully so?

Symptomatic in my case is that the adapter isn't working in clamshell or open RMBP mode. Power cable plugged in or not.

I have driven my T221 (3840x2400) display and my 27 inch catleap (2560x1440) display off this adapter:

Cheaper than the apple and better compatibility AFAIK. It works with 120hz LCD's too.
