Updated to High Sierra a few days ago and several instances of this process (mdworker) are running non-stop in activity monitor. I understand this is for Spotlight but this is really slowing down my computer and making it run hot.
Anyone else have issues with this? Any recommendations?

If you have external drives attached, exclude in Spotlight under Privacy tab for indexing.

Boot into Recovery Drive and run Disk Utility <First Aid on your internal drive: Macintosh HD

Run the command below in Terminal to reindex Spotlight

sudo mdutil -E /
