Media keys in iTunes?

Hey,
I've never been too sure about what QuickTime media keys are, but they appear to be an archaic form of DRM, in which the user has to enter the code manually. Assuming I'm right, can these media keys be used in iTunes, and then an iPod? Thanks in advance!
