Just picked up this little unit which provides simultaneous charging for the iPad and iPhone with correct amps for each (2.1 for iPad / 1.0 for iPhone). Excellent reviews. Direct from MediaBridge for $12.99 with free shipping. Also available at the same price from Amazon, but you'll have to pay $5.10 for shipping.

Definitely a quality made device and it works great.

You don't have to have 1A for the iPhone. The iPhone will draw what it needs if you connect it to a 2.1A charger.
