I'm wanting to order a custom laptop messenger from timbuk2 here, but I don't know what size will fit a current unibody 17 inch MBP. According to the dimensions listed by apple here, the medium would bag would fit it fine. On timbuk2's site the large says it fits most 17 inch laptops, but the true width is too big. However, the true width on the medium bag would seem to fit. Does anybody use the medium timbuk2 messenger bag for their 17 inch MBP?

I've searched and have found a lot of people using the medium bag for their 15 inch MBP and they say it fits "perfect". Some people mention that they use the large bag for their 15 inch also. The site's specifications would seem to fit perfect with a medium bag, so i'm not really sure. I would prefer the medium bag, but I don't want to waste my money since you can't return custom bags. Any ideas?

Here are the measurements:

MBP 17-inch Unibody: 15.47" W 10.51" D

Timbuk2 Medium: 16.1" W 11.1" D

Your 17-incher should fit just right in a medium bag. I would get the large if you plan on using a padded sleeve. I would say a snug sleeve would still be okay for the medium bag. I took the measurements off the Timbuk2 and Apple sites.

Ignore the dimensions posted -- the 17" unibody MBP is an EXTREMELY tight squeeze into a medium laptop messenger.

I have the Timbuk2 medium messenger and when I had the 17" unibody I attempted to fit it in there. it essentially feels like it's going to break the bag and takes a whole lot of force to get it into the laptop section.

You'll really want to go with the large messenger for the 17" MBP.

right I saw that. I just wanted to hear from someone who actually has a 17 incher in a medium bag. So far from researching people have said a 15 inch in a medium is "perfect" which doesn't make sense because it would seem a 17 inch would really be a perfect fit. Either that or specifications on timbuk2's site are off. I'm a little hesitant to trust their specs so It would make me feel better knowing someone who has both to comment on the fit.

hmm interesting thanks for the information! Well the main reason I don't want the large bag is because I'm a pretty small guy and the large bag looks ginormous from the pictures..

I wouldn't say the 15" is a perfect fit. It leaves about half an inch of space on either side of the laptop compartment. I'd prefer a little more padding in there for a 15". The 17" is way too tight of a fit. I'm a cheapo, so if I could use the Medium bag, I totally would. The large is the way to go for the 17".

Yeah, sadly I can't comment on how big the large bag actually is. I didn't want to pony up the money for a second Timbuk2 bag so I bought a cheapo one for my 17".

do you know if the laptop compartment is suspended? like if you set the bag down, your laptop won't hit the ground? I thought I read somewhere that it did or maybe I'm just getting confused
