I saw an Amazon listing claiming the old slimme fit the new iPad. (mini rant: I am not pleased that they called it the new iPad, because it really, really screws up Google and other searching. Gah!)

Somehow I doubt the old Melkco fits, right? I would love it to. The new bezel covering one isn't my cup of tea.
Assuming is does not what are the current options for leather or wooden cases with smart cover like function rather than portfolio?

I have a 2nd generation black walnut Luardi that I completely disassembled and remade to fit, but after a few days the heat from my new iPad shrunk it or something, and the back cracked a lot. I didn't have much time beck a trip to try gluing it, but there was more than a mm gap! It had fit well after a bunch of sanding etc, but it became tight before cracking.

I'd still like to use the top by regluing it (again) to a new attachment system. At this point using a hinge from and Apple smart over looks best, but I had liked to protect the back also. The wooden slats roll up to a nicer angle than my leather smart cover. It is kind of like the Miniot, I guess. I'm considering their new one, but it seems more likely to interfere with a back case with that new hinge?
I make leather accessories often involving neodymium magnets, but a smart cover hinge looks a lot more simple to incorporate into the walnut cover. Anyway...

There is a neat x shaped back protector from M Edge, but for the 2. Perhaps the oven trick would work, but I'm not sure I'd like to feel the interruption in form. A nice leather shell would be better IMO, but I am not finding much. I'm so picky about the look and feel, but I'm afraid of damaging my iPad.

What do you all recommend for non bezel covering cases in natural materials which hopefully allow for smart cover attachment for the new iPad?

I forgot, but I found a ce last night with a sticky pad holding the iPad. I liked it with or without chopping it up to use the walnut cover, but I wonder how it feels since the cover's edge sticks out. Unfortunately I don't seem to have it saved. It was like a hardcover book with the back extending. Apple products are so nice without stuff on them...
