I am proposing a rules committee advisory board to help with rules creation and advise the staff with member complaints about how rules are administered.

This committee would be comprised of 15-30 members with at least 6 months of active participation on the site. A mix of veterans and newer members would help with the oversite of the current rules and ways to offer improvements going forward. The rules committee would meet in an undisclosed forum and discussions would be private. Any member who has a complaint about the enforcement of rules can make an inquiry with a committee member to be addressed with the staff

Thoughts?

This idea would do nothing but create more drama, confusion, and problems, in my opinion.

MacRumors has been known to ask for input at times from members.

I don't see a need for some forum member committee to be involved in the inner workings of the business.

The complaints are handled with transparency already. Nothing is done in a vacuum. No matter what, some people are never going to like what is going on with the forum.

The business is not perfect but, in my opinion, it is an excellent business with a strong following and voice.

They decide the rules without input from the members. So no.
The business doesn't need input from you, me or anyone else, in regards to rules. Don't know why you think you should be entitled to help run the business.

So you are suggesting an advisory board that could work with admins and mods? I’m not sure if you believe this board would be independent and if that would be acceptable.
The rules need to be streamlined. We have rules on trolling that don’t do anything. Member input is needed if these issues will be addressed. An advisory board advises the staff of a program. It doesn’t become a member of the staff. Oversight boards are independent and their purpose is to make sure the rules are applied evenly.

If you have feedback on the rules in general (not a specific moderation event), you are more than welcome to leave that feedback here. That is exactly what this forum section is for.

If, for example, you think the trolling rule should be reworded, post your suggestion here and everybody can join the discussion.

Sounds very much like the existing role of administrators, except for the number of us. We always welcome input from members, and are also members ourselves. Whether or not we're called 'staff' is just semantics - administrators, like moderators, are volunteers and not formal employees.

I think the moderation team is horrible. And I’m not just saying that because of any recent personal activity but from examples of other people here on the forum. I can’t list any examples of course because that would break forum rules. Kind of a catch 22. You want to point out why moderation stinks but you would have to break the rules to do so.

Actually, the Moderators were members long before they became moderators, and were chosen because they were active, balanced and contributed to the overall health and well being of the Forum. All of them were and are actively involved in making/modifying/enforcing the rules, while still (for the most part) remaining active and contributing members of the Forum. And, as stated by @Weaselboy the Site and Forum Feedback is the place to suggest new or modifications to rules and to have an open discussion about them, and it is open to all members to post/read/interact rather than adding another layer of bureaucracy to complain about and ascribe conspiracy theories to. Unfortunately, this Forum has too often been used as a gripe fest for complaints and butt hurt feelings rather than a positive vehicle for change.

Been on the internet since early 90's. Been participating on many forums and groups in general, over the years.
Think I realize most patterns that goes on in the psychology of groups :)

When things are not worth our time and inputs we have a tendency to stop giving our energy to it, and move on. Trying to change existing groups may be worth it for some, for most people, not!
When certain patterns becomes obvious, it's better to give our energies and time to where it matters for us, instead of trying to change others.
They rarely do ;)

Remember that you only hear the loudest complaints. The majority say nothing because everything is working well and properly.

I certainly don't believe people are quiet because they're agreeing to absolutely anything, at all!

People, as always, tends to give their energy to what actually brings them forward. If they don't feel it matters to them, or they don't feel included, they find other paths.
