So Apple recently dropped the 2022 Holiday Gift Guide store page (where for once they actually advertise Macs wooooooo!) and well...
So with...whatever the hell these abominations are, I think it's time we had a discussion about Memojis
If you've known me, I have an absolute deep hatred for Memojis (and the uncanny corporate emoji avatar style in general.) In terms of avatar creation, Memojis are incredibly limiting. So many headshapes look the same and they all make the same damn face. Just looking at one sets off mixed feelings, especially when they make those hideous smiles like above.
Remember Mark Zuckerberg's VR selfie, and how ugly his avatar was that it was mocked and ridiculed across the entire internet that it caused Meta stock to tank?
That's the feeling I get every time I see a memoji. There's the thing: In VR, I can just turn these ugly avatars off and go into apps where they're not supported so I can ignore them entirely. I can't ignore memojis because everywhere I go there's always someone using them as a profile pic. Even my own family members use the damn things as their iMessage pictures.
In contrast to Memojis, allow me to present the Nintendo Mii:
Miis are what Memojis should have been. Miis keep it simple and cute looking and aren't uncanny like Memojis are. By keeping it simple they have a lot more options for customization, different shapes, different eyes, different hairs, and they only got better overtime. You could pretty much recreate whoever you wanted with Miis as people made Peter Griffin and Hank Hill as Miis
Pretty difficult to do that with Memojis. Hell with the release of Miitopia on Nintendo Switch Mii 2.0 came with it, and the Mii creation got even better with even more options that even more characters were recreated with hilarious results, being able to use new custom face texturing to use new art styles. This is why the Miis have had such longevity ever since the Nintendo Wii in 2006, while Memojis and the other corporate uncanny avatars are viewed with disgust by the general public.
So bottom line, Memojis need changing. Cut back on the uncanny 3D floating heads and make them more simplistic with more customization options. Apple's great for simplicity, so make the avatars simple as well so they don't hurt my eyes every time I look at them.
