If the max memory in the MB or MBP is 6 gigs, why on Apples website does it say to have an equal amount in each slot for better performance..?

No. The maximum "supported" is 4GB but it is possible to have it at 6GB but that is not supported through Apple.

So if you have problems with it, Apple will refuse to help you if you have 6GB of RAM installed.
