After someone backed out on my previous arrangement to pick up a 2011 15" for my 2012 13", I may have tracked down a 2010 17".

My primary need is the screen real estate. A Retina just isn't a wise purchase for me right now, and the extra heft isn't a big deal for moving things around. I also do not really need much horsepower as this is primarily a Excel/PDF/Word research and document based machine. That said, 1920x1200 to open multiple documents side by side would be great.

My concern is that I currently have 2x8GB sticks of 1333 mhz memory in my 2012.

The 2010 is only "rated" for 8GB at 1066, but I have had mixed experiences in the past. With some previous systems, I have used 1333 and 1600 mhz DDR3 in machines only supporting 1066, and it just downclocked automatically. Other times I have been riddled with kernel panics to the point of it being nearly unusable [without saving documents and spreadsheets every 10-15 minutes].

The other concern is size. I have read of it being unofficially supported (16GB) in the 2010 models, but for every person I read that says it works fine, I find another that says "nope, no dice."

Can anyone verify 100% whether 2x8GB sticks of 1333mhz memory would function in a 2.53ghz 2010 17" cMBP?

Thanks!

They worked in my 08 unibody MacBook (not the Pro)....

Edit: 1333MHz that is

Could you flesh your post out a bit? What 2008 do you have? What memory? The chipset is everything in this case.

Also, it appears that only the 13" 2010 will take 16GB, the 15" and 17" models are limited at 8GB
