menu bar and desktop items have disappeared..

i was updating to the newer versions of itunes and quicktime when my computer froze. when i reboot it, the menu bar up top does not appear and the same goes for all the items on my desktop including the hd icond. None of the programs open when click it on the dock except safari (and my visual hub). Only then does the menu bar show up but only for safari options...when i log on to the other account on my laptop the same thing happens, even when i create a new account..
i can still access system preferences but nothing else works, not even finder or trash...anyone know what went wrong? any help would be greatly appreciated, tia.

I too am getting this problem, though it does not seem to be associated with newly installed iTunes.

Did you get a resolution to it?
