I want to reduce the spacing to get more in the menu bar. Hopefully Bartender will be made to work and it can address both needs.

You can adjust the spacing as desired via Terminal:

i use hidden bar, which works (& which you could, at least, use for now)...

I use this on MacOS Sequoia. I'm quite happy using Unix/Terminal but I like this app's simplicity.
