I've had this problem since i got my imac about a year and a half ago,
its basically just a nuisance. The menu goes grey and floats on top of any *fullscreen* video. I can move the movie window to an external monitor and watch videos without the bar in fullscreen, but the menu still goes grey on the imac side. This happens in fullscreen no matter what im using (hulu, vlc, quicktime, youtube....) I've included screen shots, any ideas?? Thanks.

Wow, never seen anything like that before. Do you have the menu bar set to be transparent? Try switching it from whatever it is now and see if that does something. (System Preferences>Desktop & Screen Saver)

Also, does this happen when you disconnect the secondary monitor?

I tried toggling the transparent/opaque but it didnt help.
I've googled the issue numerous times but it doesnt seem like anyones encountered it before.
the second monitor doesnt seem to effect it, if i move the menu bar to the secondary monitor in display>arrangement, the same bar shows up on the second monitor and not the imac's.

its quite wierd

Yeah, I tried searching and found nothing either. If removing the secondary monitor does nothing, then it could be something software-wise. Did you install any haxies or themeing programs? I'm really out of ideas, but do let us know if you find a solution.

Its looking like im the only one whos ever seen this haha
but its not due to hacks or anything,
i thought maybe it was an issue with vlc, but it shows up on every player fullscreen so i ruled that out. i think id have to reinstall os x to solve it,
so i think im gonna have live with it

Is it normal that the screen on my MB goes black when I enter full screen on an external display?

If you can, try using the Discussion forums on Apple's site. They might be able to help you out more.

Yeah, it's normal.
