Menu Bar

I don't want my menu bar in Safari/Iphoto, etc to hide. I want it to always be on top where I can see it but cannot locate where to make changes to this. Newby to iMac, one week and loving it but want to make it MY iMac. Thanks.

I think I found what happened, I had the screen maximize instead of just stretching it out to the size I wanted. Once I resized I can see the menu bar now. Thanks everyone for your help.
