Merge notes problem

I have a note in Mail on my computer that has a grocery list and has been synced to my iPhone. Now, I add, for example, "coffee" to the list on my Mac and "milk" to the same list on my iPhone. When I sync my iPhone again, it overwrites what is on my iPhone with the list that is on my Mac. That is, it adds "coffee" to the list, but deletes "milk". Is there a way to actually merge the lists, as opposed to giving priority to the list on my Mac. Note: I did NOT have the Replace information on this iPhone checked for Notes.
