W00t, USB backup is too slow...it'll be superfast in a few years, and Time Machine 2 will be fantastic :)

USB2's maximum transfer rate is 480mbps, sustained is around half that.

I hope that USB3 can sustain near it's signalling rate...

...

Although as with most things theoretical maximum and actual speed are two completely different things.
Exactly. The reason that USB2 is so much slower even than FireWire 400 is that USB requires the CPU in the loop whereas FireWire does not. USB3 may be faster than USB2, but a lot of users will be in for a surprise if they expect it to seriously compete with FireWire.

Well, that and the fact that FireWire uses a dedicated bandwidth for each device's traffic. But, admittedly, USB does have it's uses, and it's a helluva lot better choice than a mix of PS/2, Serial, Parallel, and SCSI standards which it effectively has replaced.

Think USB 3.0 has any chance of making it into the september redesigns?

Do all think that the USB3.0 spec just released by intel has any chance of making it into the rumored MB and MBP redesigns for september?

magnetic latch is already on the existing MB designs. I know, because I own one lol. So to tallest skil, the MBP is unlikely, but the MB already has it. USB 3.0 is brand new, hasnt even made a prototype yet I believe. So no its not going to be in the september refresh, WUSB is something to look at...

No. Apple usually takes around year after public release of some technology to use them on their models. So at least it'll be that. Anyway, why use USB. 3.0 when were getting Firewire 1600 and 3200!

SnowLeopard2008 has a lot to learn. That's #1. :p

#2, Intel just released the spec to manufacturers, and it's not even the "final" spec as it has not yet been ratified by the USB Promoters Group. Absolutely no chance.

USB 3.0 won't be ratified and included in hardware until around 2010 at the earliest.

About as much chance as eSATA, DisplayPort, Blu-ray, and a magnetic latch.

None, if you didn't catch that.

How can you be so naive in saying that there is no chance of a magnetic latch... i understand the others but there is quite a great possibility of that being implemented.

When will Apple put USB 3.0 ports into their computers?

Assuming this article is correct and we get USB 3.0 by late '09/ early '10, how long do you guys predict it will take before Apple will start to include USB 3.0 ports into their laptops and desktops? I'm looking to buy a new Apple next summer, but with 3.0 just around the corner, I may just wait the extra 6 months -_-.

Yep, right next to the Blu-ray drive!! :)

I assume at some point they'll have them. But that could matter little until manufacturers make 3.0-capable devices. The ports would be backward compatible obviously, but it's kind of a chicken-egg thing.

I wouldn't hold out on an MBP simply for that. USB 2.0 is still darn fast for external devices (compare it to a WiFi connection). If you NEED 3.0 later, you can buy an expresscard adapter.
