A Stoned Throw From Ground Zero
We all know that Apple has delayed the release of Merom based Core 2 Duo
MacBook Pros and MacBooks.
This might be due to unacceptable thermal test results in Apple's much thinner
form factor making it necessary for them to re-tool the lineup.
Or they've simply decided to hold off until they could use the improved
Santa Rosa chipsets.

I've been wondering what kind of temperature readings people are getting
on their Merom based Core 2 Duo iMacs?

It would also help to note what video card is installed in your machine along
with any temperature readings for that card.

If we do not see a release of Merom based notebooks within the next few days or weeks, then heat may be the issue.

The Core 2 Duos are perfect for the IMacs which have much more room for ventilation and cooling, but the ultra thin design of the current MBP and MB chassis may be limiting what Apple can squeeze in there without causing too much heat.

Apple is more likely to skip the Meroms if using them were to result in laptoasters, wind tunnels or premature failure of logic boards and their individual components.

We're also not going to see a whole lot of improvement in heat issues until ATI
and NVidia manage to reduce the heat in their video cards.

If Apple is forced to underclock the Meroms in order to make them meet their preferred notebook thermal guidelines, then there may be no point to using them.

Since how Apple and Intel are now walking down the history hand in hand, you may see Apple get voltage-binned Core 2 Duos ;)

Couldn't Apple just be waiting for the Ultra Low Voltage Core 2 Duos? That'd give us less heat and more battery life.

...plus smaller caches and lower clock speeds. A PR nightmare.

An ultraportable macbook with ULV core2 duo would be ok though.

Perhaps Apple's design sucks. As if no DL dvd burner is not bad enough, now no current processors too! Meanwhile people who continue to get these aging machinese are being fleeced on parts that costs a fraction than they did 1/2 a year ago. How convenient!

At least your trolling is consistent.

Their design could be said to be at the thermal limit due to the trade off between the aesthetics and other engineering concerns. Not sure I'd agree with it sucking, I'd say you're just trying to get some attention.

I posted this thread to gather USEFUL information.

It's not helping anyone to derail this thread into the dark side.

If you have heat monitor results, please post them and please note which processor and video card you're running.

i was under the impression that hte C2D ran with more power efficiency. thus leading to lower temperatures..... I could, and most probably am, be wrong.

upgraded my mini core solo to T7200 core 2 duo. solo chip was running in the high 50s during normal use. installed the c2d with artic silver, cleaned the heatsink, and now running the the high 40s or low 50s during normal use.

two cores instead of one, faster clock, and running cooler... not a bad deal if you ask me!
