Apple directly states that you won’t get watch notifications when you are actively using your phone. I’ve never had issues with this until the most recent software updates.

iPhone X 11.1.2
Apple Watch series 0 SS 4.1

I can be in the middle of an active iMessage conversation on my phone and every time I get a reply my Apple Watch will continue to give me iMessage notifications of these same incoming messages. It doesn’t make any sense and never use to act this way.

I have the watch set to mirror notifications from the phone. I’ve tried turning both off and reconnecting, etc.

The messages will continue to pile up in the watch Notification Center until I pull it down and start to clear them out by swiping. Usually once I swipe one, all the others backed up will clear away on their own.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Did you try turning your phone your phone and your watch off. Turn them both off then turn your phone on and then your watch. Wait about 30 seconds for both of them to completely shut down before you turn them on to worth a shot

Restart - right - this has fixed the "sync" problems for me in the past.
