Message notifications not working?

I don't know what settings on my MB Air are set wrong - but I don't get any on-screen banner notifications from Messages. It works fine on my Mac Mini but not the laptop. I've turned on the Messages notification and added the app to the Focus setting.
Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You mentioned adding the app to focus settings, but do you get notifications when not in the focus mode? If so, that would be a hint that it's something with the focus mode and how do you set it up but if not, maybe a setting in notifications.

Don't forget to make sure that 'Text Message Forwarding' in your iPhone's Settings->Messages is set to include the MB Air.

Thank you. I just checked and it wasn't set to forward to the MB Air. I've corrected that setting on my iPhone
