Message previews always hidden

I traditionally keep message previews hidden and if I want to preview the contents of a message will just pull down the notification shade to check what it says. With iOS 11, the notification shade being the lock screen now the message contents are still hidden and it’s basically impossible to preview a message without going into the message app. And if you enable message previews the message contents show everywhere (such as when the notification first arrives). Is there any way to have similar functionality in this regard to iOS 10?
