Messages handwriting input disappeared?

I sent a few handwriting drawings to friends then I closed the handwriting input. Now for the life of me I can't figure out how to get it back.

After closing the handwriting input rotating the phone now just does like it used to in ios9.

Press the button next to the return key that looks like an upsidedown script "e".
