Messages in iMessage come up with numbers not names

ive had this problem for a few days now and all my messages in iMessage only have numbers where the person who sent it should be. Their number is coming up but their contact is not attached to it.

do you use icloud for contacts?

i've had my contacts in the cloud for a while now, and only some of the contacts in Messages on Mavericks show up as phone numbers rather than the name i have in my iPhone. i don't know why some do and some don't. anyone know a fix?

Begs the question, is your contact book intact?

I don't understand. If i have a contact in my iPhone set up, with a photo and all, and contacts are On for iCloud, why wouldn't that transfer over to the messages app in mavericks, which uses my contacts from the cloud?
