Messages not working -- gray screen

Is anyone else getting a gray screen in Messages? My friend:
- upgraded from Lion to Mavericks,
- tried to start Messages,
- got a screen saying she needed to confirm her account,
- clicked the link in the email,
- started Messages again,
- got the attached screen

I've tried removing some iChat/iMessage related plist items from her user Preferences, but to no avail.

Any help?
