Messages on Mac showing phone number rather than name

Hi all

Messages on Mac (High Sierra) is showing the phone numbers of my contacts rather than their name as per the Contacts app. Messages will show the name of the contact if I change the phone number in contacts from 07xxx to +447xxx, but I don't want to have to go through all of my contacts and alter their phone numbers to an international format, and this used to work on my old 2014 MBP, even on the same OS version.

Can anyone help and tell me how I get the names to show?

There have been a few people on this thread that seem to have got it working. Others...not so much.

I had the same. What i did was logout the iphone from cloud totally... in mac i unchecked the "contacts" in icloud for sync...

then logged into icloud.com and removed every contact.. and then i logged in icloud on the phone and checked contacts to sync with icloud... and then i did the same on mac... got all contacts and then message works with name...
