Messages on my Mac won't respond when sending pictures

As the title says, whenever I try to send a picture through iMessage on my rMBP it stops responding. The pinwheel just keeps spinning and nothing happens until I force quit the app. I'm not sure when the issue started, I just noticed it last night. Any ideas why or how I can fix this?

Maybe more info is required to give an educated answer.
What message program are you using?
Which OS?
It may even get a better reply if you post it in the OS section of the forum as I expect it isn't MBP specific.
