I've noticed that on my iPhone 6 plus, if it has been turned off and I have received texts during the time it was off, when I turn it back on and my messages pop up on my homescreen, it just says the phone numbers and not the names of the contacts. However, once I open the phone and go to view the messages in the messaging app the names are all there like normal. Is there a reason for this? I'm running 8.1.1, but I think I remember this happening even prior to updating to the latest software. Thanks!

Speculation here:

Now that Apple encrypts everything on the phone, the device does not have access to the Contacts data. So, until you do an initial unlock of the device, text messages can't get to the name info.

Once the device gets the first unlock, the encryption keys for Contacts then get unlocked and then the Contact data is unlocked in turn.
