We've had a couple of problems with text messaging and I'm not sure if it's the same problem or different issues. My daughter has an iPhone 11 and a non-cellular iPad (about 2 years old, not sure of model). Lately, she's been getting some text messages only on her iPad. This includes messages from my wife and I on our iPhones as well as some of her friends. She thought that some of her friends might be using her email address instead of her phone number, but I'm pretty sure I'm just using her phone number (not certain though). Also, when we look at her location it shows where her iPad is (usually at home), not where her phone is (with her at school, etc.).

Issue #2: Over the weekend I tried to send a message to a person with an Android using their phone number from my iPad (non-cell, about a year or 2 old). It kept saying failed to send even though I clearly had wi-fi and could go online, etc. When I tried with my phone it went through right away. I didn't know if this was based on their device somehow, or why one of my devices would work and not the other.

I'm pretty sure all devices are up to date, or at least on the newest builds. Most of my searching has led me to help articles about no cell or internet connections, etc., which isn't really the problem. Was hoping someone around here could shed some light. If I can provide any more info, please let me know. Thanks!

I think that you should compare settings very carefully on the devices. There must be some difference(s). Or else it would work. - Me and the wife have 3 iPads, 3 Macs and two iPhones. All newer models (which is not really relevant for this to work) and all on current operating system and app levels. everything works just fine. So you problems are local.

The iPhone can be disconnected from iCloud so the messages don't synchronize. That might also explain why "Find.." does not see the iPhone any more. - Can the iPhone accidentally have been deleted from iCloud (or have Find... been turned off on the iPhone? I would check that.

Your own problem with sending from the iPad and iPhone looks a lot like the same sort of issue.

Remember that there are three different login's on iPhone and iPad: One for iCloud, one for iMessage and one for App Store. They can be the same or a different e-mail address, but they work as three different logins. So check both the iCloud login and the iMessage login. And the e-mail login as well.

Thanks, I think you must be right. For all the different log ins, if they are different will that cause a problem? For example, on my iPhone under Settings>Messages>Send & Receive I have "2 Addresses". Under that it says I can receive and reply from my phone number or email, but then just my phone number is selected for Start New Conversations From.
I'll have to check my daughter's log ins. She has an iCloud email, but she may have also chose her GMail email for something. Just not sure if I should be making them all phone numbers vs. emails, etc.

Thanks!

I would keep those settings as simple as possible. Mixing with two email adresses can be a pain if you are not fully aware what happens when you do it. So perhaps you should make the iPhone and one email as the primary message device (phone number and "all messages starts from here". And then make settings on the iPads corresponding to that. And let iCoud synchronization do the rest. - Most of us don't really need the iCloud mail for other than receiving mails from Apple and that can also be changed in settings.

Yeah I'll try and go through all the settings tonight.

For my iPad trying to send to Android, I did some more searching and I think I might need to set my phone to do text message forwarding. I just assumed an iPad could text anyone over wi-fi, but it sounds like you need a cell connection. I usually am texting my family from my iPad and they all have iPhones, so maybe that's why I never noticed. Weird, never thought about that...
