I'm looking for a messenger bag to hold my 13.3' macbook, 2 books, A4 pad and cables etc. Just something simple, not one with 68 pockets and 10 straps. Just simple, like incase or belkin would produce. Anyone recommend any?

Lowepro exchange messenger..

I think you'd love it. Simple design, holds a 13" macbook without issues and also the things you mentioned shouldn't be a problem.

You can remove the two "walls" inside and/or use them as extra protection on the sides and at the same time use to put something in between to store.

One of the pockets up front has a zipper and the other one doesn't.

It's a pretty small messenger bag overall, but fits much stuff into it.

Best thing is, it's cheap! You can easily find them for 20$ with shipping included, the quality is also really good, i have had mine for a year now and it doesn't show any wear at all.

The only downside to it, it lacks a shoulder pad, though you can easily retrofit a velcro one.
