Messenger for Mac - dock icon doesn't bounce to alert of new messages

I just got a new MBP and I'm trying to get used to everything. One thing I've noticed is that when I'm using Messenger for Mac and I have a new message, the dock icon doesn't bounce to notify me. I've checked my preferences and nothing seems to be wrong there. The only time I'm notified of new messages is when I deliberately minimize the conversation window to the dock - is this the only way because it doesn't make a lot of sense... The app icon on the dock doesn't bounce when I don't minimize the conversation and also when I switch spaces I don't get notified of new messages either.

Any input's greatly appreciated :)
