My internal disc drive failed to work some time ago, since then I have purchased an external drive. I have all sorts of problems with this, one being that I cannot use Boot Camp to install Windows XP.

Can this be done?

Nope. The problem is generally that where it is needed for Boot Camp, the OS is not running. Some combinations of hardware and firmware work others don't.

You can either use a workaround as I posted in your Windows on Mac thread or you can disassemble the Mac and actually connect an external optical drive to the SATA port used for the internal drive.
