Metro Paris Subway use Wifi, GPS or Cellular?

I will be travelling to Paris and purchased the $.99 app Metro Subway Paris. Looks very handy. I want to know if it uses Wifi data collected from Skyhook wireless, or if it needs a network (cellular) connection? My plan is to buy a sim for an unlocked phone to use for calls, and put my iPhone 3GS in airplane mode with wifi on while I am in Paris.
