Via Thinksecret, A Metrowerks representative confirmed to Think Secret that the company is dropping development of its Mac-compatible Palm OS software development tools. The Windows-hosted version of CodeWarrior Development Studio for Palm OS will remain.

According to Tifany Smith, Metrowerks' Marketing Manager for Palm OS tools, the cancellation was a result of "reduced demand." However, Smith said that Metrowerks is committed to both the Palm OS and Mac platforms. She said the company will continue to support Mac developers using the company's CodeWarrior for Palm OS, version 8, via normal tech support through February 2004.

The company denied rumors that more product cancellations are in the pipeline. "This decision does not mean that Metrowerks will be retreating from the Mac OS X tool market, only that we will not be supporting new versions of our tools for Palm OS hosted on that platform," Smith told Think Secret.

Smith also said that Metrowerks is conducting preliminary work on a new "code analysis tools suite" for Macintosh desktop developers.

Every time I turn around, something like this hits us. I don't have a Palm, nor do I develop any software, so I am not really sure what this means for Mac Palm users?

Would this be related to rumors about an Apple-branded PDA?

Re: Metrowerks to drop Palm OS CodeWarrior for Mac

Given that they released the latest Palm for Windows version ages ago, while the Mac version has mouldered, it's no real surprise.

MetroWerks takes and takes but doesn't really give.

They got the Mac market in the first place because Symantec just wanted the cash and they stopped developing and lost their 95 percent market share. MetroWerks cares just as much about the Mac market as Symantec did in 1995. They haven't really done much to improve their stolid, but solid tools.

I once asked them about a deal for CW for Palm OS since I already had CW Pro. There were no deals...$399 was it.

Of course, Palm is partly to blame for some components that are only available on Windows.
