Mexico travel question

If I put my phone in airplane mode and turn on wifi via the hotel's wifi or Starbucks, will I be charged for messages that I send? Also, will I be charged for any incoming messages that I receive? I plan to send many picture messages and I was wondering what is the best and cheapest method to use while I am in Mexico. Thank you for any input in advance.

So long as you send them either over iMessage or email via WiFi, you should be fine.

Airplane and WiFi on, as you mentioned, is the right idea.
