Mic on iPhone's earphone doesn't work with late 2007 Macbook

I can use the earphone as sound output but not input, why?

Check if the "Internal Microphone" item under the "Input" tab of the "Sound" preference pane to change to "External Microphone." If not it may not be a supported Mac. I thought they started doing that later on in 2008?
