I recently received the new M2 MBA in Midnight. I'd like to keep it fingerprint free, and I am paranoid about scratching it, especially the monitor. So, I'd like to have multiple microfiber cloths that I can use in rotation to keep them clean and free of debris.

Despite the high price and all the memes, Apple's Polishing Cloth does seem really nice. However, I am not willing to buy more than one of them.

I've noticed that microfiber cloths tend to fall into two categories that don't work especially well for cleaning screens:
  1. The thin, flimsy, smooth ones that often come with eyeglasses. The frequently recommended MagicFiber cloths seem to fall into this category. I've found that these types of cloths are hard to grip and tend to spread fingerprints and smudges. I'm not sure what explains that latter phenemenon.
  2. The the ones that have a "terry" texture (e.g., these). These seem to be effective at removing loose pieces of dust from surfaces. However, debris can get easily trapped in the fibers. I would worry that these could inadvertently scratch a screen by trapping debris and then rubbing the debris across the surface of the screen.
I've seen recommendations for "alternatives" to Apple's Polishing Cloth, but many of them (such as the MagiFiber cloths) seem to fall into one of the above categories.

Yet, there is a third category—the category into which Apple's Polishing Cloth falls. I've seen some describe microfiber cloths in this category as having a "suede"-like texture. Maybe these are examples of what I'm talking about. In my experience, these tend to clean screens most effectively, though I'm not sure why.

So my question is, if I don't want to drop $19 on Apple's Polishing Cloth, what are your recommendations for microfiber cloths in that category?

I can tell you it's not #1. It's much thicker and higher quality than those kind of cloths. Even my high quality Crizal polishing cloths that always come with my Crizal lenses aren't as good, and those are thicker and more durable than most and do a GREAT job. It's also definitely not the kind in your link with the "terry" texture.

The best thing I can use to compare it to is maybe the inside of an iPad smart cover, except even softer and higher quality than that. In typical Apple fashion, I've never really had a polishing cloth quite like it. I do think it's worth it--I've only had it a couple of weeks but find that it does a great job cleaning off my Mac and iPad screens, and I even use it to wipe down my iPhone screen, even though it has a protector on it. It doesn't just smear the dust around on the screen, it lifts it off a lot quicker and easier and at least lets you start from a fully clean slate.

Hope that helps!
