Microphone Problem G4 10.2.8

My G4 450 10.2.8 cant record sound, I pluged regular line in 2.5 jack mic. and it doesnt pickup anything, tried on PC -= works fine,.
1. first in sound profiles, mic imput lever was gray didnt show,
after some fiddling around the input bar appears several bars max. but the sound still cant be recorded.
Can anyone please help?
