Microphone problems

Okay quick question:

I’ve had some external speakers hooked up to my macbook for a while now. Today I just bought a new external microphone and am using the audio port for the microphone now.

Problem is im having trouble getting it to work. I’ve gone into my audio preferences and changed the audio port to being audio input but it still doesn't pick up any audio from the external microphone.
