Microphone randomly stops working

I use Skype frequently for work and recently my in built mic (on Macbook Air 2013) has stopped working at random intervals. A reboot solves the problem, but I'd like to know what causes it in the first place. This never happens during a call, I usually notice when I initiate a Skype conversation and the person I'm talking to can't hear me. I don't use headphones.

Any ideas?
