Microphone Volume So Low It's Nearly Unusable

Hi all. Several months ago my microphone volume suddenly became so low that it's nearly unusable. I've turned up the input volume as much as possible, and according to the Mac's visual indicator there is definitely still input, but the microphone somehow does not seem to be picking up on sounds very well; it's as if I am talking from 20 feet away. FaceTime calls and video recordings are impossible Any idea what's wrong or how to fix it? Thanks!

Replace the microphone.
