Microsoft has announced a new, more compact Surface Laptop with a 13’ display.
Overall a disappointment, as it is almost as big as the MB Air 13 M4 and only 20 grams lighter.
And it's more expensive too, Apple you can do better, please give us a compact MacBook like the 12’ device was, but with a modern keyboard and Apple Silicon!

Quick note on your poll question; I have an old 2017 12" Intel processor-based MacBook. The screen is cramped enough I don't recommend this for heavy use if the notebook's display is what you'll usually be looking at, but the portability is a dream...light, fits very nicely in my camera gear backpack's rear pocket or a tote bag, and connected via USB-C to an external display it's been very nice. And the screen is fine for use on trips.

My point is, if the MacBook were going to be my only Mac, no, I'd go with something larger, but for a 'mainly for travel' 2nd Mac (where my main Mac, in my case an M4Pro Mac Mini, handles the workload at home), I might if the price was right.

IMO as a MBA lover, the default scaling on the 13” is off considerably (the 15” is fine). Based on that Apple would certainly balloon a 12” version so unless they increased the scaling and gave it more PPI it would look awful.

I get wanting something smaller, but this 13” Surface is basically the same size as the MacBook Air 13” and only 20 g lighter, plus it costs more.

The charm of the "MacBook" should be affordable then portable, like the 2009 white plastic one.
