Microsoft Direct Push Email

Was wondering if anyone can tell me whether or not I can set how often it synchs?

I'm not sure how this works, I guess I understand that it instantly gets emails, but does my iphone keep checking the server or does my server send stuff to my iphone only if theres something new?

Asking mainly because of how much data I will be using.

Any info or help would be great thanks.
