I'd like a free Mac Office. I think it's cool of Bill Gates to do it. But I would assume he has an ulterior motive in doing so (vendor lock-in).

Equally amusing was when the Vista presenter (at CES 07 Keynote) had to ask for applause. He demonstrated something, waited a second, then said "What no applause?" and the crowd was forced to clap:D

Didn't Apple use to give stuff away at their big keynotes?

Yes, but it wasn't a given, and people didn't know about it before hand. Kind of the like the Oprah-check-under-your-seat thing. And it certainly was never $500 worth of software. I think they gave away the Pro Mouse when it first came out and replaced the hockey puck mouse.

they gave a free isight to all the developers when they introduced it at wwdc a few years back. who really cares, this isn't bribing for applause its just like a prize ... people who go to this kind of thing are looking to be excited the same way people who go to the apple one are.

Who gets excited about Micro$oft product intros? A free copy of Office would not have gotten me through the door. Who wants to see the release of some new piece of kludge work from Redmond, not in this lifetime. When MS can come up with a product that works right out of the box, is reliable, and has some style to it, then I might pay attention when Gates mouth moves. The Zune is a great example of their half hearted attempts. My son's X-box 360 has been nothing but trouble from the get go.

Well depending on how you think of it the CD containing Office costs Microsoft a lot less to produce than the Pro mouse.

Personally, I'd love to get a free copy of Office 2007. I've installed the beta and can tell you that it is a great piece of software. Very clean GUI, things are placed where they should be.

Remember, MS gives everything away that sucks!!! Remember when they couldn't compete with Netscape so they gave IE away.

edit: they give ALMOST everything away that sucks- I guess one has to still pay for Windows!:D

this is nothing new. a couple of years ago i went to a launch event for visual studio 2005 and they gave every one a free copy. they have different sessions of these events for IT and for developers where they go over what's new. I'm all signed up to be there.

Sounds good, Office is quite expensive in the UK. (Coming From A 14Yo) I checked the website, nowhere really within distance of me. Shame. I'm on the beta and its good.
