Microsoft Intellimouse Buttons 4 and 5 not working

Hello Mac Community,

Are you ready for a most mundane question about my mouse?

I have spent hundreds of dollars on mice throughout the years, but they all fail me somehow. The only one that works the way I like (3d Modeling) is the Microsoft Intellimouse! And I love their reissue of it.

However, I cannot get the side buttons 4 and 5 working at all. The Microsoft Intellimouse pref pane doesn't have any effect... I did a terminal thing here: http://macappstore.org/microsoft-intellipoint/

to no effect...

is there any way to get my microsoft intellimouse side buttons working in High Sierra?

The solution is to use either "SteerMouse" or "USB Overdrive".

That should "liven up the buttons" and you can assign them to do almost anything you wish...
