It's in Microsoft's best interest. Apple would retaliate I'm sure with iTunes. It was part of their strategic partnership announced a decade or so ago.

Things like iWork, OpenOffice or NeoOffice would mean that Microsoft pulling support would just be a huge loss of revenue.

Microsoft makes Office 2008, sure. But it sucks heinously. I actually run Windows XP in a virtual machine with Office 2007 because 2008 is so bad.

Take the app that most of the working world is used to, cripple it, and put it on a Mac. A portion of switchers will switch back after the crap that is Office 2008.

i have no issues with 08

what exactly is your reason for disliking it

Thats a ridiculous overstatement. It's not that bad. I don't really have any issues with it, though I realize there are certain obscure features (and maybe one or two no-so-obscure) that it lacks compared to the Windows version.

Even if you need those, the product doesn't suck - it just doesn't meet your particular needs.

Ok. You know what, you both could be right. I haven't installed 08 on my new Mac. Maybe I hated it so badly due to my experience on my old Mini. I know it was missing my financial functions, but that's pushing things for normal people.

I hereby temporarily rescind my prior statement and will retest. But if it sucks, I will be back, and just as loud. :p

the updates have really sped it up. i actually like it to be honest...apart from the whole spaces issue lol

For those with a sense of history . . . Microsoft Office was originally developed on Mac. Remember which platform had the graphical interface . . . Microsoft Office was introduced by Microsoft in 1989 for the Mac OS with a version for Windows in 1990

I can't quite remember what I was using back then.

I think had both a Macintosh II and Mac SE about then. Does that seem about right?

My time flies.

money, yes... but also compatibility. Office has taken over it's market, and while OpenOffice, Google Docs, Pages, and other programs will all save to a .doc, it will sometimes mess up and Pages can't even open them.

because Microsoft reaps in cash when people buy their software, and Apple reaps in cash when people realise that Office runs on mac too and buys their lineup of macs. a win-win situation.
