Thanks for the tip, maybe this will fix an issue I had earlier today when I tried to write in a document Word just froze and I had to force quit it.
 
Hope this fixes the issue with saving on a CIFS/SMB share.

OS X update fixed my problems

10.6.2 update fixed my office problems that started the way you describe.
