Microsoft Says to Take Aim at Google
Wed April 2, 2003 04:01 PM ET
PALO ALTO, Calif. (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. MSFT.O , the world's No. 1 software maker, on Wednesday said it is taking aim at privately held Google Inc., the Web-search company that's so popular its name is used as a verb.

"We do view Google more and more as a competitor. We believe that we can provide consumers with a better product and a better user experience. That's something that we're actively looking at doing," Bob Visse, director of marketing for Microsoft's MSN Internet services division, said.

Visse said the company was making some significant investments in developing a better search engine. But the company has not offered specific plans.

Microsoft would not be the first Web portal provider to step into the Web search segment. Last month, Internet media company Yahoo Inc. YHOO.O closed its $235 million purchase of Internet-search company Inktomi Corp.

Microsoft has said its been searching for ways to capitalize on its various technologies, for example data retrieval and analysis, by entering new markets. It has also targeted security software.

Google, the No. 1 Web-search provider, has become so pervasive that it is not uncommon for people to refer to searching the Internet as "googling."

A Google representative could not be immediately reached for comment.

Google has been seen as a top IPO candidate despite a lagging economy, but a company co-founder recently told attendees at a high-tech conference that going public is not on the front burner for the Silicon Valley company.

omg. that is like the end of the internet. every single thing u enter would be recorded and sold to a vendor. grr. or even if u search for porn, you would be sent over to the authorities

Re: Microsoft to buy Google?

We believe that we can provide consumers with a better product and a better user experience.

Yeah, just like they did to hotmail.

msn Google. I'm picturing it now. Ugghhh.

um, microsoft, M$, um has more money than they need.

Not that they would pay it, but if you were offered 1 Billion Dollars (stick pinky in corner of mouth) would you say 'No!' - or would you fold and laugh and then feel guilty for the rest of your life.....

Not a good thing, bastards.....I'm still pissed at the Bungie buyout.

D

i think he might be saying that he doubts there going to refuse...for the right sum

anyway yes this would suck...google it one of my most used sites...its THE BEST obviously for searching and i love its news function, it has become my homepage. i love it cause its not flashy, its a utility and only has the things you need. no crappy bells and whistles that you don't need

Umm, guys...maybe I read the article wrong, but I think it says that Microsoft is developing technologies to better allow it to compete with Google. I didn't actually see anything about Microsoft buying Google outright. I don't think it was even eluded to, really. I could be misreading this, though. :)

I guess you're right, it doesn't actually say they are plannning to take over Google.

But a Microsoft search engine, especially if it became big, would just disgust me.

I don't see how Microsoft could be able to make a better product than Google, but they would probably still succeed in becoming the leader anyway. That's just the way M$ is.

True, but if M$ makes software like google, it will suck. Period.
M$ will make A google w/spyware, w/bloatware and security loop holes... anything else.

yeah you know it doesnt say anything in the article about MS purchasing Google, try reading it again, it says they view Google as a competitor and MS thinks they can offer a superior service....

and so what if MS has it's own search engine, there are tons out there right now and the ones that I don't like I just do not use, if you don't want to support a microsoft google clone then just don't use it, it's that simple. Microsoft has as much right as anyone else to do it.

Medea is absolutely right here. So what if Microsoft creates their own search engine that supposedly offers a superior experience? They claim that XP provides the same superiority, yet we're all using OS X for a reason. God bless freedom of choice. :)

P.S.-Hey Medea. Cat Power ROCKS! I just saw them, as a matter of fact.

Indeed, Cat Power does rock, I saw her a year ago though I'd like to hear the new stuff in concert soon.

MS has money to burn. I wouldn't be surprised if they bought out Google. After all, heads of companies are in it for the money. If MS offers enough money, they'll sell.

I wonder if Google will be called Google. MSN Google as someone mentioned? Maybe MS Google? MicroGoogle? Microsoogle? Microogle? MSNoogle? Maybe they'll just get rid of Google all together and just call it MSN Search?

I remember hearing Google runs on Linux. I wonder if MS will change that if they take over. I'm sure they will, they probably can't stand anything to do with Linux.

I doubt it, actually. They've yet to get hotmail running on Windows servers, so I would imagine that Google would be a bit of a challenge as well. That said, I'll again point out that nowhere in this article does the author ever make any mention of or even speculate on the theory that Microsoft will buy Google. Let's PLEASE stop talking in concrete terms about this one. :)

I'm not so sure that this is true in Googles case. The people who run the company are the same pair of tech people who developed the initial google algorithm and set up the initial Google site. They have publically talked about going public but said (something to the effect of) that their own laziness was causing them not to do it at the moment. There are too many forms to fill in!

Oh and while your at it - get some buddies and blow up MS - pc division. then fortify the MacBU.
